There is actually not much more to say on this blog... I am still recovering from the "shock" of suddenly being back home again. But I still want to show you some pics of Kolkatta, unfortunatly I had to do some last ones in a hurry.
With my "rucksack" full of new experiences I am now looking for a job. Hope I will be more lucky here... In future I'll look more carefully into those NGOs before setting a foot in their office...
Thank you again for visiting our blog and taking part in our adventures (and highs and lows)!
Luv, Sylvia

sudden changes

I don't quite know how to write about all the things that have happened in the past few days. It must sound very confusing and sudden, but this is quite how it has been for me. Things with the NGO in Kolkata didn't work out at all and I only just realised in the last two or three days that the situation won't change. It would just get worse. (I will let you know in more detail if you wish... I'm still in the phase where I'm talking about the wrong things that happened all the time... so I'll spare a little moaning for you! ;-)) So I decided to quit and leave for Delhi with Mesum and fly back home. With some stress and driving around we could finally book our ticket for monday. (So right now it seems just right to come home...) It is a big disapointment for me as I was looking forward to staying here longer and getting to know this country better. But I must say, if the working experience didn't materialise, I truly have got to know this country a bit better... The Queen apparently used to stay here, although I don’t quite know how many times she came here. It is a huge marble building and now hosts several museums with paintings by British colonialists and also an interesting exhibition on the British rule and the Independence struggle. In many places there are exhibitions on the Independence struggle, which is a very present period in history. There is also a nice park surrounding the Memorial, which seems to be a place for couples to sit together on the benches in the shade. (Mesum, this time I didn’t try to sit on a bench and enjoy the park as I felt I had already enough of being more interesting than the exhibition inside… J)
I also visited the Academy of Fine Arts nearby. There are several exhibitions on embroidery, carpets, miniature paintings and contemporary artists. There is also a room (which is the only air conditioned room and you have to take your shoes off) where a friend of Tagore donated some of his personal items, paintings, letters and manuscript. There is also a box with some of his hair inside… So I really got the impression how very important he still is for Bengal and also the whole of India.
Finally I went to see St. Paul’s Cathedral, which is quite big. I thought it would be nice and cool inside (as our churches tend to be), but unfortunately it was as sticky-humid-warm as outside… So as sticky-sweaty as I felt by now I made my way home and it started bucketing down, just as I got into a taxi…

“If you want to see the real India…

... then you have to go to the villages.” (For people not familiar with this insider, this is what everyone keeps saying…) So this is what I finally did. We went by train to the Birbhum District, around three hours northwest from Kolkata. There is a place called Shantiniketan, which was founded by the multitalented Intellectual Rabindranath Tagore. He still is a very important person and everywhere there are pictures of him and people sing his songs and read his literature and poems. Shantiniketan is a very nice place and he founded a University there, which has become quite big and apparently many foreign people study there. After being in major cities it is very peaceful (shanty meaning peace) and there are mostly people on bikes on the road. We stayed in the house IISD owns and went by car to various villages. The people we met are leaders of Self-Help-Groups the organisation formed for the artisans. The women showed us their saris, bedcovers, dresses etc. they have made. They are all beautifully embroidered with a special kind of stitching called “katha”. I have rarely seen so beautiful cloths and it was interesting to see how these artisans live and work. You would never think that in such simple conditions (just sitting on the verandah, no light) people could make these lovely things. The people were ever so nice and gave us tea and fresh coconut they just got from their palm tree. Yummy! As every person in India seems to go under some category (or caste) these people are minorities, basically because they are Muslims. So IISD is working together with the Minority Commission to help finance these people and especially the oncoming trainings to improve their skills, design and knowledge in marketing.
In the afternoon we went to a Tribal village. The people here belong to the Santhalis. They are very poor and mainly work on the fields of the landowners. They live in mud huts, which I noticed are very cool in the mid-summer heat. They speak their own language and have their own traditions. While we were there, there was a big dispute between the women from the self-help-groups and the village politicians. The latter weren’t quite sure why IISD was helping them and why they had given them cycle vans (a kind of “pick-up-cycle”). It got quite heated at some point but in the end it seemed to be cleared more or less. As she told me later, it seemed to be more of a dispute between two brothers, one in a self-help-group and the other in the village politics. So that was quite interesting, I’ve not only seen people from state- and national politics but also on the village level.
The countryside is so beautiful here. It is very green and I’m amazed that every spot of land is cultivated. I more used to seeing grass fields at home (or sand in Ladakh) and then there is so much land here. The earth is red, which gives the terracotta it’s reddish-brown colour. Work on the fields is mainly done by hand and with oxes (Ochsen?), here and there you see a tractor. There are many ducks, which surprised me, and many goats (either blocking the roads or being butchered on the road side…). So, these days here have been a very good and interesting experience. And especially it is much quieter, green, fresh air and little cooler in the countryside (not to say “in se nature” J). Unfortunately I didn’t take any photos, I felt it would be a bit pushy to come and immediately pull out my camera. But I think I’ll go back next week, so maybe then I can give you an idea of what it looks like. Talking about pushy on taking photos, many Indian people don’t quite have a sense of that. One couple thought I was part of the decoration in a restaurant and acted as if they wanted to take pictures of the room. She just stood in front of me and took a photo! Without even the “madam, one snap please?” question. So if you ever feel a lack of attention in your country, just come here and people will be glad to just stop and stare and take your photo...

cochin - (sorry, but you really constantly are getting cheated or at least everyone seems to try to...)
So, hope more from this end of India soon...

mysore - baylukoppa - mysore

here in south india exist not that good train connection then up to north india. so i took again a bus (this time not a super deluxe or semi deluxe) from the gouverment to madikeri. madikeri its 1100 meter over sealevel. so was nice up there,in the night was cold, i feld i was again in ladakh, i used a blanket in the night. the city or better the town is really small, so i could easly walk around by my self. i was surching for a hindu temple, so i was asking several people on the street where the temple is, i saw one temple but the style was more muslim then hindu, so i ask in this direction on the mosque, and there say no no. anyway i gave up and ask the policeman on the street and he pointet the same direction then i was thinking the mosque is. so i went there, and was a hindu temple inspiered from muslim architects. on the next day i went to see the tibetan settlements so i went to baylukoppa, very nice place. i saw the golden temple, i never saw such nice temple. many paintings inside the wall, and three huge statues. and many monks, there had praying time and was nice to listen the voice and the playing music instruments like the horn an the drums. so i was very impressd!!
back to madikeri i visit the raja's tomb, also in style like muslim, but was hindu again, and two mosque. here down south i saw now in every city and town a mosque, so i think here is a large of number of muslim's.

now arrived in mysore, the last hillstation i will see, now i booked my ticket to cochi (i will go on saterday evening on a nightbus) and tomorrow i will see here the city palace, which i saw from the bus when we drove in the city. was very nice from the outside. but i will tell you more later about it.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://indien2006.blogspot.com/2006/06/madikeri-baylukoppa-mysore.html' title='madikeri - (after moonson, and the heavy storm's) the boat's are now on land, and all had like i roof or hat to cover the boat, looks like a house. yesterday after i saw the match switzerland against togo ( yeahh the swiss won 2:0) was coming a heavy storm over mangalore, with thunders and flash and lots of rains.

i really liked mangalore, is a nice city, clean and not so noise, and of course much more green then in the northern city's. and the weather was better then in goa, not that hot, and wet. one's again i left with the bus the city to madikeri. the ride was bautiful, palmtrees and ohter trees, and up and down. madikeri is on 1100 meter over sealevel. here is really pleasant! i will come back to talk what i saw here.

no photos anymore from mesum...

unfortunately i cane show you not anymore some pictures about my journey, because my digital camera makes to big files i cant download this on the blog. and i did't found yet a good program an the internet places to make the files smaller on the windows program. maybe some one have for me a advised. thank you und sorry for dont show some pictures...

aurangabad - panaji - vasco da gama - panloem - panaji

i took a bus from aurangabad to goa, exactly to panaji (panjim) the small city is not directly on the sea. is on e river. is a nice city, some churches and very green.here more south its very much green, many trees and there are some hills, its a very nice landscape. now the moonson starts, so sometime is raining and the air is very wet, sometime even worse then when is very hot. so the first day i did not quite much, i was tired, the bus was very uncomfortable and so cold (ac bus). i did a short walk in the city and eat something. the next day i hired a motorbike. first i visit vasco da gama, not a really nice city, a big port, an more industry buildings, then others. so i went further to panloem or i tried to go there. was i nice ride down there. then finally i found a very nice beach.. was not exactly in panloem but very close. no one was there, was like a paradise!! I've been driving with Ms. Chaudhuri from IISD through nearly whole of Delhi to meet some of the officials here. So I've met some quite big shots in several ministeries and also one from UNDP at the UN Place... That's quite interesting and on Saturday I'm going to a Secretary's home and I'll meet his daughter who could also be of some help for my work here. Apropos work... what I'll be doing is the following: On Sunday I'm going to Kolkata (Calcutta) for about a month. There I'll meet people from the organisation and also I'll go to the village areas where all the artisans live. I'll be seeing how they work and live (they are mainly poor and some are from tribal origin). They do things like embroidery or pottery. This will be very interesting. I'll stay in a village, in a flat they rent for coming to "the field". Then back to Delhi (end of July, beginning of August) and here I'll do research on all the handicrafts in the whole of India. I'll also have to look at artisans work and all the information will be gathered for a webstore. They want the artisans to participate in the global market, but without third parties exploiting them. For this they're getting help from different ministries. So I'll be gathering information in the library and also from these people I have met. So it's much like the work I'm used to from Uni, except for dealing with all these big shots... :-)

So, I'll be writing more from Kolkata. Hope you at home are all enjoying a cool summer (not 41C like here...) bye bye for now and looking forward to messages...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://indien2006.blogspot.com/2006/06/pahar-ganj-nord-sued-ost-west-pahar.html' title='pahar ganj - jalgaon - ajanta - aurangabad - ellora

was time to say goodbye to sylvia, was really nice to stay with you in ladakh, thank you very much!! so i took a train from delhi to jalgaon, a sleeper train, was quiet good, but noise all the time, craying children, and some discussion about the seat number. jalgaon is the main junction from the train coming from delhi, colcatta or mumbai. i was staying there in a really nice hotel, and the manager was a friendly helpfully man. then the next day i live for the ajanta caves. there was more then 20 caves, all are buddhist caves. there have some statue inside and lots of painting. the painting and the statue are some in a good shape, some are broken, or the painting falls down the wall. so sometime you will see only some pieces of the paintings. but the caves are really old, some 500 ad old(500 years before jesus). was really intresting to see this, full of details, and we was looking around for more then 4 hours (a boy from holland joins me). the paintings and the statue tells you a story about buddha when he was on this earth. in every cave the guard tells you do the pictures not with flash, and after the 10th cave i was thinking now i knew it. but still on the last cave i understod why there tell every one again and again. i indian took a pictures with flash, and the flash will destroy the paintings, so the guard was shout at him and then was a big discussion about this. and also it's not allowed touch the statue, but the indians must touch everything, its bad for the life for this caves, there will destroy faster then shut be.

after visit the caves, i was traveling with the bus down to aurangabad. a nice city, with some trees and parks and looks very clean, not normal for a indian city. so i found a nice hotel a little bit outside. i rest a little bit and then the next day i was going to the ellora caves. there is three section, one is hindu, one is buddhist and finally the have some jain caves. i start with the importance cave, the kailash temple, a hindu cave, to show the god of kailashanta. in early days the temple was covered with white colour, to show the mount kailash, based in tibet (or china whatever). this mountain is for both, hindus and buddhist a very important place. i hope sometime i cane also visit the kailash. the temple was full with statue outside and inside, there was no paintings. i spend there more then one hour. to long, was so hot, and still i shut see more then 20 caves. after i saw all buddhist cave i give almost up, now i was more then 3 hours walking to see the caves, took a lot of pictures, and i was tired and thirsty. but i was thinking i want see also the jain caves. so i but myself together and walk to the 1km farest jain caves. was also intresting, something between hindu and buddhist caves. this caves in ellora not that old then the caves in ajanta, but the there are not in a good shape, and of course every indian touch and climbing the statue, and inside the caves stinks like hell, there are many bat inside and you will walk on a carpet of shit. so for me was the ajanta cave much more nice.

back to the hotel some christians have a meeting there, there speak about jesus and the bible. its nice i think, but make me sick when there start to talk with you and tell you shut believe in jesus, and start to force you to read the bible. and today in the morning i saw the pastor, i wished him a good day, and he asked me how are you? i told him, fine. i asked him also, and he says very fine, because im beliving in jesus and god help me......

see you soon, im going now to goa, where i dont know. where the bus will drop me, there i start explore the state.

Nun zurueck ins "sizzling" stickige Delhi...

Die Frau sagte immer, es sei "good chang, good chang".

Fieldwork with the Dzos

Buddhas Birthday today!

Julley
Today is Buddhas Birthday so we decided to go to Leh to see whats on. There were many people proceeding on the main bazaar when we arrived. First there came many women dressed in their special clothes, wearing their nice hats. Then came many monks, some with the big yellow hats. Some had the big 'trumpets', drums or big cimbals. The nuns came last and then the lay men, carrying big books with which they touched the heads of the people alongside the road. At the end children from various schools walked along singing. They all wore their uniforms. In between were some waggons with people showing different stages in Buddhas life. For example when he reached Enlightenment or when he gave his first teachings. It was very interesting, especially as we haven't seen any festivals yet.
Things have changed quite a lot here. There are many more Tourists and the shopkeepers seem to have cleaned out their shops for the season. Also it has become very green, at least in the villages or around streams and rivers. So it looks very nice now, or at least in spots, and not so dry anymore. Also the road to Srinagar has opened up, so there are many delicious fruits and vegetables in the market. Jummy!

Some updates on our plans for the next weeks:
We wont stay as long as we planned for in Secmol. So we are leaving next weekend. We will then go on a Trek (don't laugh, it's only the Baby Trek...) for four days. It's supposed to be very nice and a good one to start off with. We will be going with two other volunteers staying at Semcol. Then we will stay on a bit to do various things for the family for Amma Dolma and also for the School in Spituk (or rather Mesum with his electrical skills and me as assistant...:-)). So we will get to see some more villages and do some more walking or trekking. We are planning to leave for Delhi in mid June. Probably over the road to Srinagar, we are still checking on the situation there, but it should be okay to travel through Kashmir. We will keep you all up to date about our further travels.
Take care and Julley from both of us!

a bouncy julley

Kostenpunkt 5200 CHF.

Old Palace in Leh

So sieht also etwa unser Tagesablauf aus.
Julay!

finally arrived

yep, we did it! it was quite a long journey, first my cousin drove us to the airport in basel (do nomol danke vil mol, gell!!). We had some overweight (well not we, our luggage...) and we smiled very nicely and the lady let us through without paying the supplement. then we flew to london and from there to delhi. we had to wait there from 11.30 t0 5.30 in the morning until we could fly on. it wasn't too bad, time went by quite fast. and this morning we finally arrived in Leh. The flight went okay and at the end the sky cleared up a bit and we could see the mountains. That was so fantastic and especially, to land in Leh we had to fly very close to the mountains.
The coutryside is really very impressive and most of the mountains are still white. It's not too cold and the sun warms up during the day.
At the airport Norbu from Aktion Ladakh came to get us and took us to his place first where we had some delicious parathas and tea. From there he took us to a hotel here in Leh. We're going to stay here at least until Sunday. We really need some time to recover from the long journey and especially also from the climate and altitude change.
so that's all for now, luv from us up here!

getting excited

Also dann, tschüss liebe Familien und Freunde! Bis bald auf diesem Blog!

------

Every day we're getting more and more excited about going to Ladakh. We've got to know more about Ladakh, Secmol and the region. Thanks to Tselha and Pema from the Tibet Corner in St.Gallen, Dolma Tethong and Emerita Rusca we've already got some contacts in Leh and Phey. Phey is a small village near the school of Secmol, about half an hour on foot along the river Indus. They also gave us some insider tips for beautiful places and monasterys we can visit. I'm sure we'll soon be able to tell you more about them on this blog.
Bye bye dear families and friends! We're trying to learn a little Ladakhi, so we can at least say "hello" and "thank you" when we arrive. (For those who don't know (or have forgotten), we're leaving on the 30 March.)
Mesum will be working together with some of the students and teaching them skills around electricity and solar panels. I'll be working in the camps the school organises once a year for the students. I'll mainly be doing English conversation classes, but what exactley I can do, I'll find out when I'm there.
